Where this data comes from

Last updated: 18 August 2026

Oregon IQ presents Oregon political data drawn from public records. This page lists every source, what we do to it, and what it does not cover.

Campaign finance

Source: ORESTAR, the Oregon Secretary of State’s campaign finance filing system — public records filed by political committees.

What we do: we load filed transactions, group them by committee, contributor, and payee, and total them. We do not audit filings or alter reported amounts.

What it does not cover: spending that is not reportable under Oregon law; activity that has not yet been filed; filings amended or superseded after our most recent load. Entries ORESTAR publishes as aggregate buckets are labeled and are not individual donors.

Donor geography

Oregon IQ shows campaign-finance geography in two separate map layers, each built from its own published artifact and bake run.

The county and ZIP-area choropleth places contributions by matching a normalizable Oregon ZIP to a Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) and county. A contribution is “unmatched” when it has no usable Oregon ZIP or the ZIP does not map to an Oregon ZCTA — not because the filing is missing. Most unmatched rows are out-of-state donors or filings without an address.

The political-contributors dot overlay is a separate bake. It aggregates standardized contribution rows into Oregon ZIP areas, applies count suppression, and places synthetic dots within each area. Rows that cannot be matched to an Oregon ZIP area are excluded from dot placement; cells with fewer than five distinct contributors are withheld separately.

When a map is loaded, each layer shows coverage counts derived from its own artifact at runtime. This page does not print live totals — open the map to see the current figures.

Elections and districts

Source: Oregon Secretary of State election results and district definitions.

What we do: we present results and map them to district geography.

What it does not cover: unofficial or in-progress counts, and any contest not published by the state.

Geography

Source: U.S. Census Bureau boundary files, plus state district boundaries.

What we do: we simplify boundaries for display. Simplified shapes are for visualization and are not survey-accurate.

Voter registration data

Source: the Oregon voter registration file, obtained from the state.

How it is used: to produce counts and, for approved clients, voter lists. Use of Oregon voter registration data is restricted by ORS 247.955 to lawful elections and political purposes; it may not be resold or used commercially. Every client is reviewed before approval, and every request carries a use attestation.

What is not on this site: individual voter records are never published on public pages. The public pages show aggregate counts only.

How current it is

Each page shows the date of the data behind it. Different sources update on different schedules.

Corrections

If something here looks wrong, tell us: team@gatewayci.com. Include the page and what you expected to see. If a filing itself is wrong, the filer or the Secretary of State’s office is the place to correct the record; we reproduce what is filed.
